Many managers and recruiters don't enjoy this part of the job. Many say they don't have time. And many don't really know how to go about checking references. I personally am a big fan of reference checking. My questions are difficult and require a lot of thought from the people I talk to. My goal is to gain a true portrait of what my candidate has done to make a difference in the bottom line of the companies he or she has worked for. The way his or her references respond- how quickly, how in-depth, and of course, how favorably - tells me what kind of respect my candidate has gained from others in a professional environment.
This is a great article for employers, touching on some important tips regarding Reference Checking. I hope you find it useful.
